Going to Work in DRAG
I don’t know where I found this video, but I thought the 8 minutes was worth it.  What really hit me was her reference to ‘going to work in DRAG’.  I realized that I do this sometimes.  For those of you who may not know, I have another job in addition to my coaching practice.  And I admit that I sometimes show up to that job in DRAG.

There…., that’s me, sitting with the business men, putting on my business face, business brain and in full fledged ‘business DRAG’.  Sometimes, I find that I cannot be myself, or rather, I’m choosing not to be myself because it might ‘cost’ me something and I’d rather play it safe.  Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of times when I’m not in DRAG and I let my true colors fly, and that is much more enjoyable. But I find myself asking why I need the DRAG?  After all, isn’t my work life still part of my life and why does there have to be a dividing line between the two? How comfortable am I just being myself? How comfortable are you?

The video suggests that authenticity is the new marketing tool, especially among the new generation in the workforce.  Show who you are, make the connection, own your mistakes, build your relationships, be authentic….these are becoming most important.  Some may say they always have been.

A great example of this came to me this week when an executive manager told me “I think I can retire on this right now.” (referring to an e-mail he had received from a prior employee).  A few years ago, Rob (not his real name) had come to him for advice and coaching regarding his career and soon realized that he may make a bigger impact in a different organization.  Rob found another position outside of the company, but soon found himself looking for another job after a recent downsizing.  One of the first people he called was this prior manager. After a few discussions and brainstorming sessions, Rob quickly found himself another position within a third company, which was excited to utilize his creativity and passion. In a thank you response to his prior manager, Rob wrote (paraphrased) ~ One knows who one’s friends are by those that help during times of adversity.  You are one that I will never forget ~

I don’t think this manager goes to work in DRAG.  I think he is just the person that he is and that he genuinely cares about people.  That’s authenticity at its best.

Coaching Class for Today:
Personal Development and Evolution

What I want for you is for you to be able to truthfully say:

  •  I could die this afternoon with no regrets.
  • There is nothing I am not facing head-on, nothing I am putting off dealing with.
  • I have more than enough natural motivation, inspiration, and synergy in my life; I am not stuck.
  • I have learned to take the path of least resistance as I accomplish my goals.
  • I am living my life, not the life that someone else designed for me or expected of me.
  • I attract success; I don’t have to strive for it or chase it.
  • I am evolving, not just improving, because I continually experiment.
  • I am at that place in life where I initiate and cause events, not wait for others or events to do so.
  • I am beyond striving for success; I simply enjoy my life and focus on what fulfills me.
