June 2009 Going to Work in DRAG The video suggests that authenticity is the new marketing tool, especially among the new generation in the workforce. Show who you are, make the connection, own your mistakes, build your relationships, be authentic….these are becoming most important. Some may say they always have been. A great example of this came to me this week when an executive manager told me “I think I can retire on this right now.” (referring to an e-mail he had received from a prior employee). A few years ago, Rob (not his real name) had come to him for advice and coaching regarding his career and soon realized that he may make a bigger impact in a different organization. Rob found another position outside of the company, but soon found himself looking for another job after a recent downsizing. One of the first people he called was this prior manager. After a few discussions and brainstorming sessions, Rob quickly found himself another position within a third company, which was excited to utilize his creativity and passion. In a thank you response to his prior manager, Rob wrote (paraphrased) ~ One knows who one’s friends are by those that help during times of adversity. You are one that I will never forget ~ I don’t think this manager goes to work in DRAG. I think he is just the person that he is and that he genuinely cares about people. That’s authenticity at its best.
“It is not what we do; it is how much love we put in the doing.”
