On a Personal Note
I love Spring. I’m a big believer in planting seeds, but not the kind Michelle Obama is planting on the South Lawn of the White House; though I think that is a fabulous plan. I’m talking more about the seeds that are planted when we pay something forward. I have found that each positive response, each helpful comment, each thank you, each appreciation, each sincere compliment or action, are all ways we plant seeds with others and nurture relationships.

I recently received an e-mail from a colleague, thanking me for recognizing his efforts in a project we’d been working on together. I was surprised, because quite frankly, it was just a quick note that I had sent him; acknowledging that his efforts had really made a difference, and thanking him for making things easier for others, especially me. In his reply, he indicated that he’d never received a thank you like that before, and how much it meant to him. I think I now have a loyal partner in that department for life and it really didn’t cost me anything. It’s amazing how easy the investment was and how large the pay out, with no risk. It’s far better than Wall Street these days.

So with that in mind, I’m focusing on gratitude in this monthly newsletter and I went out searching for some great gratitude ideas, links, and learnings.

I found this amazing flash presentation about gratitude that shows how gratitude is so basic to everything we do. It’s very short, yet very powerful.

This site has a very simple gratitude exercise that only takes 2 minutes!

Most fun of all, is this video of the Gratitude Dance! I expect to be seeing you performing this the next time we meet in person!

May's Topic: Simple Inspiration
By now, most of you have probably heard of Susan Boyle. (if not see this video). Many people have already become bored with the topic, but I think they may have really missed the meaning and significance of her performance. It’s not that she can sing (so what?—many people can sing as well as she can). The point is that she overcame fear and let her spirit soar in a very public setting, full of critics. Do you think she didn’t know that she doesn’t look like the typical, polished, sexy performer that we have all grown accustomed to seeing as the standard? I think she already knew that. More notably, I think it is very telling when she begins to walk off the stage before the judges can even comment on her performance, that she wasn’t tied to the outcome. She didn’t perform to get the recognition. She performed for the pure joy of it. If only I could be so humble and full of joy. She’s on my list of ‘people I would love to meet'.
